The potato plant (Solanum tuberosum) is a tuberous plant belonging to the nightshade family (Solanaceae). Originally native to South America, it is currently cultivated around the world and is the fourth most important food crop worldwide. Potatoes contain high amounts of starch as well as some toxic alkaloids including solanine and chaconine, which have pesticidal properties. The potato is a diploid organism with a genome size of 723 Mb.
